The diet wars are over? Well, maybe not in everyone’s mind yet, but in my book, that’s all she wrote. No more need for debate. The solution is already here. We already know what it takes to lose weight and keep it off. It will surprise the heck out of most people… at least at first… but then the light bulb of understanding WILL go off and the truth and simplicity of the solution will become crystal clear, and undeniable…

There are many debates in weight loss, but the big daddy of them all is which overall dietary approach is most effective for stripping off body fat – high carb, low carb or somewhere in between (“balanced” diet)?

Some people think that there’s still a war going on over this, and perhaps in a few isolated forums or communities there’s still bickering back and forth among the various diet factions.

But it’s all moot at this point, because the truth is…

IT’S 2010: THE DIET WARS ARE OVER!

There have been several major research trials published in the last few years that compared the major dietary approaches. Unlike some of the older research, these studies were run over a longer period of time.

That’s the clincher. Time is the great equalizer.

Extend a study to at least 6 months and you may see very different results than if you stopped it at 1 month or 3 months. After 12 months or more, it all becomes crystal clear:

Every time, the same pattern emerges – NONE of the diets work very well over the long term.

I’m not trying to depress you by saying that in the end, nothing works. What I mean is, diets don’t work if you can’t stick with them, and what the research almost unanimously agrees on today is that most people can’t stick with their diets.

One of those major studies, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, concluded that none of the popular diets produced satisfactory adherence and that compliance decreased at a similar rate over time for all of the major diet programs.

The researcher’s final comment pointed the way toward the solution:

“To manage a national epidemic of excess body weight, practical techniques to increase dietary adherence rates are urgently needed.”

The way I like to say it is:

It doesn’t matter what diet you follow…

What matters is WHAT MAKES YOU FOLLOW YOUR DIET???

If that didn’t make a light bulb go off in your head, then please go back and read that again.

We don’t need another diet. The weight loss community needs to shift focus to finding practical techniques to help us stick with the diet and workout programs we already have!

Hi Tom,
Serendipity comes to the enlightened, LOL. I am a perfect example of the long term success of following a diet, only to crash ( after a herniated disk). My journey began in 2003 with the South Beach Diet and then I discovered your blog and I followed the principles of your book. I felt and looked great, considering I was over 55 and had gone from 30% body fat to 21% in less than a year. I had gone from not being able to do a push up, to enter the 100 push up challenge and lift weights regularly. Fast forward to 2009 and doing minimal excercise, mostly walking, my doctor had said no lifting for the time being. Seeing the fat coming back was depressing to say the least. I had gotten used to being able to eat without counting calories because I was burning them with the muscle I had acquired.
So, 2010 is back to square one. Only this time I have to be very careful with my back, I am allowed only to use my body weight for the time being. Therefore, finding the motivation to stay on my diet is the greatest challenge right now. So, thank you for bringing perspective to our daily challenge. Best regards,

I want to thank you so much for your first book BFFM! I was 270 pounds and I got down to 205. What I really need is mental help. I am very critical of myself and I beat myself up all day with my self image. I constantly in my head tell myself I am never good enough. I am tired of it. I got down to 10% BF and I let it all go because in my mind I wasn't worth it. I am now 240 and I just started back to training. Will your book help me get over my mental image of myself.? You really are a great guy and I always tell everyone about your book. Seems I have great advice for people but I can't get past the negative self image. I really need to over come this. I used to be very self confident, I was a football star and was always very social. I would always workout and had a great self image. Tom, I love your first book BFFM, it was pure common sense to me and is brilliant. The physical part is no problem for me it's the mental one that destroys me.

Michael, body fat solution would be right up your alley. BFFM is a very structured, by-the-numbers nutrition plan, heavy on details, based on bodybuilding nutrition methods. BFS has nutrition info but much more about psychology emotions and self-image. I sent you an email.

It truely takes years into this even for an individual to realize that what they really need the most is mental and emotional power to stay healthy for life!

Hello Tom Venuto,

I would like to start off with a Gigantic “THANK YOU”. I recently found your information regarding “Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle” book on Amazon.com. I then did a google search and read several reviews. I had to overcome my skepticism and I elected to purchase the Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle Deluxe Edition via your http://www.burnthefat.com web-site on January 3rd, 2010. I immediately read your BFFM manual and followed the process of Chapter 1, and developed some goals.

I will tell you that I am retired from the Military and have a few disabilities. I also must tell you that I am a 100% full and complete Endomorph as you described in chapter 5. I was born heavy, carried a lot of weight and when I was age 18 I was weighed 235 lbs. I joined the military and during boot camp my weight dropped down to 195 lbs in 9 ½ weeks. I struggled to keep my weight below 215 lbs the entire 20 years I was in service. I have tried all sorts of weight loss programs to include: Atkins, Hot Dog Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, Juice fasting, Tuna and Gatorade diet, starvation, vegetarian diet (and a ton more). I would have to run 3-5 miles a day and practically starve myself most of the time to keep my weight down (so I thought).

I am now age 44 and have been retired for 5 years, and in late 2009 my weight was again at 235 lbs for several months. I received your book and immediately read every square inch and took a lot of notes. I said to myself “Ya right, eat 5 to 6 times a day, and burn body fat”; “Ya right, it will activate my ENDOMORPH metabolism”. I figured I would get huge, and would notice it right away. I have had to overcome emotional eating, and self destructive thoughts which also impact my food intake. I just got use to being large and figured that it wasn’t worth the efforts. But I decided that in 2010 I would do a few things to try only once again to drop the weight and get in shape. I already had a stationary bike, and I purchased work out used work out machine on Craigslist.

I started the BFFM program January 3rd, 2010. I am taking using the Zig-Zag approach and keeping my total calorie intake between 1500 to 1900 calories per day balanced as: 45% Carbs; 40% Protein; 15% Fat. I am taking in only Class A & B foods. I am eating 5 to 6 meals per day. And my body craves the volume of water needed now. The water intake and 5-6 meals per day vice 1 or 2 took both me and my body a while to adapt to.

I must tell you, I can feel the fat cooking off and my energy levels are through the roof “I have never had this kind of energy before”. My wife of 24 years doesn’t know what to do with me, and because I have never seen or had results like this before I can’t hardly contain myself. And my results are absolutely astonishing and my skin is shrinking easily. And I just started weeks ago! Here are my results (I am tracking them with an Excel file that I generated):

January 3rd 2010: Weight: 235 lbs; Skinfold caliper Body Fat Measurement: 33%

January 19th 2010: Weight: 217 lbs; Skinfold caliper Body Fat Measurement: 23.27%

My lean muscle mass has gone from 153 lbs to 166 lbs making my ideal BF at 12% makes my ideal Body Weight approximately 185 lbs.

I did take before pictures, and will wait until I hit my ideal Body Fat and Weight.

My clothes are already fitting very loose however I am not going to replace them until I get to my ideal Body Fat and Weight. This is simply magic advice Tom. It's a great way to approach dieting. You are totally spot on that it's the emotional and discipline sides that jeapodise people's weight control. I teach my weight loss clients the basics of how to drop body fat based on your Burn the Fat principles but also that you have to find a 'diet' that you will stick to as part of a new lifestyle - you can't hold your breathe whilst 'on a diet' or you won't keep the fat off longer term.

I have read this boo, kthe body fat solution - twice - I bought my copy this past fall. You really do address the HEART of weight loss which, to me, is 90% mental. The concept of losing weight/fat is very simple (that's the 10%), but it is not easy due to the mental games involved. I just wanted to thank you so much for this book - I started out with BFFM and it enlightened me to say the least. I am finally able to stick to my eating plan for more than one month! I am on month seven and have lost 60 pounds. I still have a long way to go, but after being overweight all of my life (I am 44 years old) I feel like I finally have the key and this weight will be gone for good.

I have "The Body Fat Solution" and am considering purchasing BFFM. Can you tell me if BFFM has detailed excercise plans in addition to what is in "The Body Fat Solution". My wife and I have hit our weight goals by following your eating plans primarily (not very much exercise), so now it is time to build some muscle and burn some more fat, keeping my weight the same. I am hoping that BFFM will have more information about building muscle.

re: Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle (BFFM). BFFM has more emphasis on nutrition than training. Yes, there are two training chapters, one on cardio, one on strength training. The strength training chapter in fact, has four training programs, exercise by exercise, complete with sets, reps and all details. however, it is not an exercise or training book per se - it does not contain pictures of the exercises - it assumes you are familiar with common weight training exercises and simply provides the program structure. there are other books that are better if its training instruction, photos etc, that you are looking for. But if its a detailed, structured, by-the-numbers nutrition program for fat loss you are looking for, you will be very very happy with BFFM.

Subscribed to your 12 myths and lies and want you to know it was great reading. I also know it was only the tip of the iceberg of information that you could provide. I was fat and unhealthy at 283. There was a time in my life that I was 319 pounds. Now I am about 140 lbs. I lost it the old fashioned way, low calories and alot of exercise. The article about the two diseased that most have hit home hard. It was so true. I learned that hard work DOES yield results. Hi Tom! Once again and two children later, I am re - reading BFFM. When I purchased it, I had to download it and spent two days printing and organizing all of it! Now I'm an unemployed but FULL Time college student with a free fitness center right on campus. (and 20 lbs overweight)

I am having alot of trouble getting my diet situated and my calories UP enough to kickstart my metabolism, but I'm on week two and improving.

People, the nutrition side is difficult at first, but it DOES get easier to keep track of... I am wondering if your BFFM book has changed or added new info since since it was only available downloaded. I'm guessing I purchased it around 2005.
